Resume Absolute: Font Styles

The only acceptable font style for your resume is Arial or something in the Arial family, preferably 10.5 or 11 point. The Arial family of fonts is the most readable and comfortable for the reader. NEVER use Times New Roman.

Resume Absolute: 2 pages

Your resume must be no more than 2 pages long. Three pages or longer equates to a drop-off of 75% in the number of people who will read it. You can use fewer accomplishment statements for older jobs or just list job titles for jobs more than 10 years old. Whatever you do, your resume absolutely cannot exceed two pages.

Have demonstrated excellent communication and team building skills, with the ability to work well independently and without supervision.

Don’t tell me what you can do or might do in the future; summarize what you have done and how it contributed to the success of your organization. Pull facts from the body of your resume (job accomplishments, education, skills, etc.). You may also include information from your written references and past job performance evaluations, but you must be able to support such information with fact-based examples.

As a recruiter, I don’t want to read your flowery, syrup-covered job objective. And I’m not interested in what you can contribute in the fight against global warming, nor am I interested in your pursuit of an environment where you can grow and blossom into a great employee or your long-term career goals. The only thing I want to know in this section of your resume is the position for which you are applying. Period. As such, your objective should not be longer than 3-4 words (unless you know the specific job title of the specific job for which you are applying, and that is longer than 3-4 words).

This is the one and only section of your resume that you should revise as you apply for different jobs. One of the beautiful things about our resume system is that you don't need multiple resumes or multiple resume formats. You simply revise a few sections of your master resume to make it fit the specific position for which you are applying.

The first line of your resume is your name – always! Use your formal name. Include a nickname only if it is a shortened form of your formal name (Bill for William, Sue for Susan, etc.) or if it is a name by which others at work have always known you and the name you want to be called if you land the job (Red, Doc, etc).

Pay particular attention to your email address. Use only a “normal” or “plain” email address. Don’t use an email address that makes you look weird, dangerous or like you might be a distraction to the workforce, such as: maddog@hotmail.com, redhotmama@yahoo.com, killmyboss@aol.com. If you don’t have a plain email address, get a free one from yahoo, hotmail, or one of the other free services.
